The early years of the Bowen company were difficult, as it was against the law to sell firearms without a license. But Bowen persevered, and by 1898, he had built a successful business selling firearms and ammunition to locals and visitors alike. The following year, John L. Bowen Jr., John's son, took over the company. In 1902, he began to produce rifle chokes - devices that prevented handguns from firing properly by restricting the air pressure within the barrel. These devices were popular among shooters because they made it easier for them to keep their handguns unloaded while hunting or shooting practice; however, they also led to increased accidents and fatalities due to mishandling of pistols with these chokes on them. In 1909, John L. Bowen III passed away suddenly at the age of 54 after many years of success in business. His son John III continued operations until 1912 when he too passed away suddenly at the age of 58 after many years of hard work in his father's company. The family name was later taken over by their grandson John IV who continued production until 1933 when both he and his wife died unexpectedly at age 82 ( unmarried). With no one alive able to take up production(), all traces of this important family tradition ended withJohn IV’s death in 1933.. It is interesting to note that even though gun chokes have been around for centuries now – primarily used as safety features on firearms – there has never been any standardization amongst manufacturers or retailers regarding their design or usage across different countries/ regions throughout history!
