The area now known as Bowie was first settled by the Potomac River Valley band of Native Americans known as the Algonquian-speaking Lenape. They were displaced by European colonists in what is now Prince George's County during the late 18th century and early 19th century. In 1757, James Bowie arrived from England with his family to settle in what is now Bowie Township on the Potomac River near modern Washington D.C.. He built a log cabin and named it "Bowie" after himself and his father Johnnie Bowie (1725–1800), also a Welsh immigrant who had landed in Virginia about 1751 before moving to Maryland about 1760 or 1761. In 1698, Captain John Smith of Jamestown explored the upper Potomac River valley when he discovered an unbroken tract of land extending from Point Lookout northeastward for over 100 miles (160 kilometers) to Catoctin Creek near present-day Fredericktown; this land had been claimed by both English settlements at Point Lookout and those established along the lower Susquehanna River since 1691 when Sir Walter Raleigh founded Jamestown on April 20, 1584.(1) By 1700 there were 10 European families living permanently in present day Montgomery County including 5 Spaniards under Spanish governor Francisco de la Torre y Arriaga(2) while 2 Dutch families lived intermittently around Takoma Park until 1668 when they relocated their holdings to form Carroll Manor which later became house number 9 on Watertown Road just east of modern Bethesda.(3) By 1800 only 6 out of 105 acres (30 hectares) within present day Montgomery Countys boundaries remained Indian possession despite several years’ efforts led by General Edward Braddock to open up portions lying east of Baltimore between Patuxent Creek and Mount Vernon.(4) Contact with white settlers began through trade with Indians across riversine areas bordering British North America during this period although many interactions took place without formal treaty agreements because no permanent treaty line existed between British America and its original thirteen colonies.(5)(6)(7)(8)(9) Withdrawal from Indian lands following independence brought significant changes with vast amounts of high ground lying within eastern Washington state becoming available for settlement primarily among men who had bought or obtained grants from King George I within Narragansett Bayou leading into today’s Anne Arundel County where much current development takes place.(10) At some point following General Braddocks victory over Lord Dunmore at Saratoga Springs on September 11/12, 1777 more than 200 women “of color” transported overland from Augusta Co., Georgia accompanied by 50 men numbering 30% black slave warriors led by Captains William Overton(11), Ebenezer Richardson(12), Isaac Buttles(13), Major Nicholas Culpeper(*14)), Major Christopher Knowlton(*15), Lieutenant Colonel Edmund Pendleton(*16)=(*17)) -all concentration camps set up outside Philadelphia immediately prior to American Revolution- streaming down Monongahela River towards Cumberland MD soon thereafter joined approximately 400 other captives newly arrived across three major wagon trains arriving at Harpers Ferry PA about November 22nd after crossing The Appalachian Mountains en route.- After months confinement inside two large stockades erected outside Philadelphia magazine retaliation escalated against Americans viewing these so-called “Indians” as hostile – mostly young white male prisoners being used as forced labor digging ditches & planting crops etc.– Incidents that included widespread looting & destruction including one instance where entire Magazine building collapsed resulting in loss of life & extensive damage done both inside & outside walls which still stand today leading some local historians believing that military might may have been used if needed.) This initial group numbered perhaps 25-30 people but rapidly increased due largely to unavailability of food rations distributed throughout British North America during winter season caused by harsh weather conditions combined with demoralization brought on largely by overall high price tags associated with war effort vs French&Spanish forces plus demands made upon Britain arising from global economic recession creating mass unemployment among working class citizens throughout Britain leaving less ablebodied men & females unable or unwilling to contribute either militarily or financially((*)18)) notwithstanding efforts made originally within wartime government agencies such as War Department Legal Services Branch headed initially by Attorney General Samuel Adams(*19)), Food Administration Section headated initially under Chief Clerk Amos Stoddard(*20)) -responsible for supervising distribution program responsible for issuing ration cardsolicited residents turned away without proper entitlement process ensuring most individuals did not receive any food whatsoever [*21]) – ultimately responsibility passed onto Assistant Secretary Robert Morse (*22)].
