Bowie, Maryland was founded in 1777 by A.P. Bowie and is one of the oldest towns in the Baltimore-Washington metropolitan area. The town is located on the Susquehanna River and is bordered by Harford County to the north, Carroll County to the east, Allegany County to the south, and Frederick County to the west. As of 2010, Bowie had a population of 24,814. Until 1821, Bowie was part of Lancaster COUNTY within Allegany COUNTY. In 1827, Bowie's post office moved from Lancaster (now known as Middletown) to Bowie after that county's postmaster moved there from Cumberland (now called Clarksburg). In 1830, a canal was built throughtown linkingthe Susquehanna River with Patapsco Creek for shipping purposes and began operation; this helped increase trade in town. The first school in town was opened in 1833 and remained open until 1951; it was replaced by present-day Bowie High School which opened on October 14th 1955. A public library opened in 1961; it closed in 2002 but was reopened as an attached branch of nearby Central Maryland Library System in 2018. In addition to education opportunities available at present day Bowman High School – which has been around since 1955 – there have been many other businesses established during its history including: a grocery store/cafeteria (1957), automotive parts store (1970), convenience store/grocery store (1972), lumberyard (1980), restaurant/barbecue place (1984), computer company headquarters building complex called "The Ark" (1991-2002), post office annexes - one for commercial use and another for administrative offices - 2003-2005, dance studio 1965-1998 & 2005-2018 respectively; all are still extant today although no longer used for their original purpose(s). There has also been development along Interstate 95 outside downtown including: an industrial park now home to several small businesses such as Laborers Ready Store Incorporated & Bethlehem Steel Corp.; two homes developments - Northgate Village & Legacy Park - both completed between 1993&1998; two retail buildings constructed at Interchange Square off I-95 near exit 73A overpassing US 301 - One featuring Bergdorf Goodman department stores while another features JCPenney anchors along with restaurants such as Burger King and Carl’s Jr.; several housing developments completed throughout downtown over time including: First Hill Plaza 2006&2009; Century City 2020&2025; The Bowies 2025&2030
