Bowie, Maryland is a small town located in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2000 census. Bowie is one of two towns in Prince George's County (the other being Hyattsville) and is part of the Washington–Baltimore metropolitan area. Bowie has been inhabited by humans for over 10,000 years. In 1795, the first permanent settler in what would become Bowie was James Ridgely and his family. The town name was given to it by Sir John Bowyer who purchased land here from Captain Edward Calvert in 1795. The early days of Bowie were difficult due to its location on the Susquehanna River between Philadelphia and Baltimore; transportation was very limited at that time. However, through hard work and determination, Bowie became a successful fur trading post and later developed as a farming community with large amounts of tobacco production. In 1814, Bowie became an official seat of government for Prince George's County after it was formed from parts of Montgomery and Frederick Counties. It remained an unincorporated community until 1965 when it amalgamated with Hyattsville to form one municipality under the name of Bowie Township). On July 4th 1865 - just three months prior to America's Civil War - General Robert E Lee marched into town with his army during his campaign against Northern forces known as "The Battle of Bowie". This event helped spur development within the town towards becoming a center for commerce and military activity during the war years. During World War II (1939-1945), much effort went into building up local defenses against Japanese attack but little progress was made towards developing industry or creating new jobs outside of agriculture because there were no available resources inside of Prince Georges County at that time. After the war ended, many people returned to their homes in Bowman while others began moving out into surrounding counties because there weren't any new jobs or resources available here either during peacetime or after wartime shortages had occurred nationally]. As late as 1951 only 2% working age citizens lived in Bowman while over 50% lived in neighboring jurisdictions such as Hyattsville or Takoma Park which had larger populations (>10k). Bowie experienced rapid growth beginning around 1960 due largely to businesses opening up throughout central Prince George's County looking for increased opportunities because newly opened Interstate 95 led directly to Baltimore via nearby US 202/MD 123/US 301 then onwards through Towson onto I-495 making travel much easier than ever before possible without having to go through downtown Baltimore & all its associated traffic congestion! Today even more businesses are opening up throughout Central PGH thanks again especially Interstates 95 & 201 etc., however there still remain many challenges faced by our once thriving Community including high poverty rates among inner city residents despite recent efforts made by both Mayor Allan O'Malley & City Councilmember Gary Wills
Bowie was founded in 1795 by James Bowie, a Revolutionary War veteran and landowner. The town grew rapidly during the 19th century, reaching its peak in 1881 when it had an population of over 100,000. However, Bowie began to decline in the early 20th century due to a series of natural disasters including the 1906 earthquake and fire that destroyed much of the town. By 1921, Bowie had only 10 residents remaining and steadily declined in size until it disappeared from maps completely in the late 1960s.
