Ball and his son, Lieutenant Colonel John Ball. Captain Ball had been a lieutenant colonel in the Union army during the American Civil War and he decided to start a business to sell military sights to civilians. The Ball’s Red Dot Sight Company became one of the leading companies in Baltimore because they were able to provide high-quality products at a low price. In 1923, Captain John W. Ball died and his son, Lieutenant Colonel John W. Ball Jr., took over command of the company. The youngerBall continued to make red dot sights available at a low cost until his death in 1984. After Lieutenant Colonel John W. Ballard Jr.'s death, his sons, LtCol James Hessler (1984-1996) and Lt Col Brian Fenton (1996-2004), ran the business until it was sold to Bushnell Firearms Corporation in 2004." Bushnell Firearms Corporation's ownership of Red Dot Sight Company marked an important change for Baltimore since it allowed for increased competition within handgun sales while also expanding into other firearm types such as rifles and shotguns

The city of Baltimore, Maryland was founded on May 24, 1792 by George Washington and his acting Vice President, John Adams. The city was named in honor of the hero of the American Revolution, General Baltimore. The first permanent European settlers arrived in what is now Baltimore in 1627, and it had been a small town on the opposite side of the Susquehanna River for over 100 years before that. In 1838, Baltimore became an important port on the Chesapeake Bay due to its location at one of its most strategic points. After a long and difficult struggle against slavery, which began with Nat Turner’s Rebellion in 1831 and continued through the American Civil War (1861-1865), Maryland became a free state on April 14th, 1865. On July 1st of that year,Baltimore merged into the larger City of Philadelphia. During World War II (1939-1945) Baltimore played an important role as both a manufacturing center for munitions production and as an air raid shelter for eastern Pennsylvania residents who were affected by German bombings during the war. In 1949, following passage of legislation creating Camden County within Philadelphia County effective October 1st - these changes formed what is today known as “Philadelphia politics” within Phillygov even though much has changed since then – including downtown redevelopment that has breathed new life into this once struggling community east of Center City
