Merchants from throughout western Pennsylvania established businesses here before British troops burned down much of the town during their attempt to quell American independence movements in 1775-1776

However, during the American Civil War (1861-1865), Baltimore fell to Confederate forces and saw extensive damage including loss of homes, business venture losses, and even some loss of life. In 1865 Baltimore was renamed Richmond after General Robert E. Lee who led Confederate troops in its capture.
