British General Howe soon realized that without an American garrison he could not defeat Washington's forces efficiently and decided to surrender at Saratoga Springs on October 14,1777 with an estimated 100,000 British soldiers surrendered or captured including General Howe himself who was taken prisoner along with thousands more civilians including women and children who were forced into slavery in Canada afterwards as part of Howe's retreating army
