Annapolis is a town in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, United States. The population was 507 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Baltimore-Washington Metropolitan Area. The first permanent settlers in what is now Annapolis were some men and women who arrived on horseback from Cecil County, Maryland on October 15, 1777. They called themselves the "Patriots." The town grew rapidly due to its location at the head of navigation waterway known as the Patuxent River. By 1800, Annapolis had a population of over 2,000 people and it became an important center for trade and commerce. In 1812, President James K. Polk ordered General Andrew Jackson to capture Mobile Bay so that France could not build an impenetrable navy there; this resulted in the Battle of Mobile Bay which ended American control over Pensacola Island following years of Spanish rule. In 1814, after two years of bitter fighting against Major Robert Ewing's Ulysses S. Grant's army at Ford’s Bridge near Annapolis (known as First Manassas), Confederate General Stonewall Jackson captured Edmund Pettus's brigade defending Fort McHenry while John Pope was commandant of Fort McHenry; Pope then surrendered without resistance or looting by his troops despite orders to do so from Union General George Meade; this event helped precipitate America's Civil War (1861-1865). After Union General Joseph Hooker defeated Confederate General Robert Ewing at Antietam in 1862, all slavery in Maryland was abolished effective January 1st 1865 by order of Abraham Lincoln with exception for operations within chains gangs still existing outside those states until their repeal by Executive Order on December 5th 1935 under Franklin D.
