Annapolis is a town in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, United States. The population was 33,634 at the 2010 census. It is the largest town in Anne Arundel County and one of its most populous municipalities. Annapolis has been home to the United States Naval Academy since 1849 and has been a center for education and culture for many decades. The city's history goes back to 1648 when it was known as "Nova Accumula". Annapolis became part of the Province of Maryland in 1776 following the American Revolution. In 1787, Annapolis voted to become an independent state, which led to its creation as the 11th state in America. After being named capital of Maryland by George Washington after his inauguration on March 4, 1800 – concurrent with creation of Delaware – Annapolis continued serve as capitol until 1784 when all but two out of 10 Baltimore counties were annexed into Anne Arundel County (the exceptions being Harford and Carroll). The first permanent settler in what is now downtown Annapolis was Nicholas Saraceno who arrived about 1648 along with his brother John Saraceno from Italy. They erected a trading post on High Street near today's Police Department building; from here they traded goods with Indians, Welsh settlers and others nearby. Trade grew steadily and by 1674 Nicholas had built a house on Fourth Street which still stands today as House No 2 within the Federal Judicial Center complex across from City Hall. In 1700 Colonel John Smith founded Mount Vernon Plantation northwest of present-day Georgetown University; he brought over 200 Englishmen including 50 women who worked on his plantation before he died in 1724 at age 64 years old. His wife Eleanor stayed behind to manage Mount Vernon until her death three years later; she bequeathed land around College Park that would eventually become downtown Annapolis . In 1797 Captain James Baldwin landed at Provost Point on Prince George's Island off modern day Eastern Shore; he claimed this land for Britain after their victory over France during the French Revolutionary Wars .Captain Baldwin named this point Fort Prince George after himself and established a small settlement there called Baldwintown which lasted until about 1800 . Captain Baldwin also built Archibald House close by where it still stands today as part of Cathedral Square Historic District . A group of men led by Benedict Arnold sailed up Patuxent River towards present day Easton on May 12, 1775 while under orders from General William Howe to march southward towards Yorktown - they were successful in reaching Yorktown but failed to take it due to bad weather conditions Supported only by 5 men total Arnold marched into enemy territory unarmed & without any supplies! This event forever changed Uprising history leading directly to revolution against British monarchy

The first permanent European settlers in what is now Annapolis were three men from Scotland who arrived with their families in 1714: Hugh Macdonald, James Ross, and Alexander Ross. They built a trading post called Fort Caroline on land that they acquired from the localDelaware tribe. The first formalities of government were enacted here on July 14, 1718 when Prince George's Council voted to establish a courthouse and jail within the town limits for the convenience of future citizens. In 1746, Annapolis became an act of Congress as part of response to Virginia's claim to all of Maryland based on her acquisition of St Augustine Parish via purchase from Spain in 1664. In 1749 Charles Calvert granted Annapolis city status; it became one of America's "first cities." In 1801 Baltimore City was incorporated as an independent municipality separate from Annapolis due to political differences between Annapolis and Baltimore over transportation issues (the two had different routes for mail). The U.S.-built Dahlgren Arsenal opened here in 1855 as part of President James K Polk's efforts to make Washington D.C., then under Federal jurisdiction, more accessible by expanding rail lines into rural areas east of Philadelphia so that goods could be shipped directly across Pennsylvania without going throughBaltimore or other major cities along the way
