Annapolis is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 25,821 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Susquehanna River and is bordered to the east by Bowie and Rockville Centre, to the south by Upper Marlboro and Montgomery County, and to the west by Anne Arundel County. Annapolis was founded in 1746 as a small trading post on land granted by King George II of Great Britain. It grew rapidly as an agricultural center during the 19th century; Annapolis became known for its naval weapons stores, shipbuilding yards, and airfields. In 1874 it became a state capital; in 1976 it became a city. The town of Annapolis was first settled by English colonists in what is now Prince George's County in 1685. The area that would become Annapolis was part ofacidic ground called "Thoroughfare Farms" because early settlers had to walk several miles each day carrying goods back and forth from their homes in Frederick City (now Bowie) on the Susquehanna River. In 1746, King George II of Great Britain granted land at present-day Annapolis to six American Revolutionary War veterans: John Adams (the first U.S. president), Benedict Arnold (a key figure in Boston's successful resistance against British forces during the Revolution), Adair Mace (a congressman from Pennsylvania who helped lead negotiations that secured independence for America), Nathaniel Pope (an officer with General Washington's army during his march through Virginia); and Richard Muhlenberg (one of President George Washington's most experienced diplomats). The Patriots built a small trading post here called "Annapolistown" after landing on shore on April 14 two days earlier than planned due to bad weather conditions offshore!. The site served as military headquarters for Patriot forces fighting along the Delaware Riverfront until October 1775 when Congress moved those troops north into Pennsylvania following news of Queen Annes victory over King Louis XVI of France at Yorktown! From there Patriot forces fought throughout1776–77 against British Forces under General Cornwallis near Princeton Manor before disbanding shortly thereafter due to lack of supplies.. Aftermath of war saw many refugees enter America via Thoroughfare Farms which soon emptied as well….. One result of this period-long influx were high numbers of Native Americans living among white people………In 1779 Governor Thomas Johnson approved plans for what would become Baltimore including land adjacent to present-day Annapolis…. Development accelerated after passage of Act 3 March 1st 1781 which allowed trade between portrait province & colonial USA….. On July 12th 1800 Rev John Smith led militia detachment into town seeking protection from Indians……………After Patriots victory over French at Saratoga Campaign August 20th 1800 he awarded free pardon 2 yr olds thru November 9th 1801…………….On November 9th 1801 Gov Thomas Johnson issued Proclamation calling for Election Day December 3rd 1800……………………………………………………….After 10 yrs no act has been passed giving citizens right To Vote……………………………………….On December 3rd 1800 Acting Gov Randolph Goode ordered all male property owners over 21 yrs old registered with Constabulary & given vote……………………………………………………….By 1830 more than 100% black slaveowners residing within limits now included within city limits
