During World War II much of what is now downtown was destroyed in bombings that killed more than 100 people but subsequently rebuilt with new structures including Naval Air Station Patuxent River which is home to both United States Navy aircraft carriers USS Enterprise (CVN 72) and USS Yorktown (CVN 76).
