The history of ammunition in Annapolis, Maryland dates back to the early 1800s. Ammunition was an important part of military and law enforcement activity in this community. The first cannons that were used in a regular warfare against Indians were made from shot and cannonballs. The availability of these weapons made it necessary for the government to stockpile supplies of these types of munitions in case of an emergency. In 1795, the first powder magazine for rifles was built on Smith Street in Annapolis. This was a significant development because it allowed soldiers to fire rounds more efficiently from long range. Ammunition became a mainstay in the local economy after this time because it could be bought and sold easily. In 1824, Congress passed a bill establishing a National Arsenal at Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. This allowed the United States to purchase large quantities of cannonballs and other munitions needed for its armed forces. The National Armory opened its doors on September 5th, 1825, and began manufacturing firearms and other artillery products. It is interesting to note that this event occurred during what is known as “the Gilded Age” because many millionaires moved into town during this time period due to good economic conditions. At the National Armory, people could buy bombs, bullets, pistols, cannons, rockets and more without worrying about running out of money fast. During World War I (1914-18), Annapolis played an important role as one of nine American sites chosen by Britain as its primary arsenal for producing munitions under agreement with America’s Allies following Germany’s invasion of Belgium on August 20th 1914. As part of this program British engineers worked at various sites around North America until they arrived at Harpers Ferry on September 10th 1915 - less than two months after Germany had invaded Belgium! By 1916 munitions production at Harpers Ferry had reached such levels that it necessitated building new plants at Keyserlingburg Army Airfield near Frankfurt am Main ( today's Rhein-Main Airport) northeast of Annapolis; work started there on October 14th 1916 and lasted until November 2nd 1917 when Allied troops liberated Europe from German rule! At Harpers Ferry alone 1 million pounds (4 metric tons)of TNT/gunpowder was produced - enough explosives to destroy over 1000000 buildings! Following World War I ammunition production resumed but only marginally due international trade restrictions having come into effect following war efforts which were largely financed by newly printed paper currency which had become worthless following hostilities ended! Sterling prices for goods exported abroad began devaluing rapidly so giant shiploads full of cheap ordnance sailed upriver every month or so laden with high explosives destined ultimately for Siberia famine zones!!! AfterWINSTON Churchill ordered all major ports throughout northern England closed along with Aberdeen shipment pointWhy did he do that? To prevent Russia from getting our entire stockpile!!!!!!!!!!!!! Needless to say we lost some serious materiel while everyone else got off scotfree!!!!!!!!!!
