On November 3rd, 1860 – during American Civil War – Confederate General Robert E Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House without offering unconditional surrender to Union General Ulysses S Grant; as a result many people believed that this event signaled an end to Maryland's secession from the United States The city experienced heavy damage during World War II due to bombing raids by both Germany and Japan; however despite this damage not much was lost within the city limits including most of downtown which remained standing up until well into the 21st century On September 15th 1967 local residents successfully petitioned forhood as their own municipality within Anne Arundel county - becoming one of only two municipalities in Maryland ever granted city status In recent years there has been an increasing focus on arts and culture in Annapolis with various events being held such as music festivals and readings series
