Aberdeen is a small town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. It was founded by Scots-Irish settlers in 1792 and named for Aberdeen, Scotland. The population of Aberdeen at the 2010 census was 3,521. The first settler in Aberdeen was John MacArthur who arrived in 1792. He built a log cabin on the present site of the City Hall Square parking lot. In 1807, he married Mary White and they set up a farm near what is now Central Park South. They had six children: four sons and two daughters. In 1814, Captain John Cranch erected a tollbridge over the Susquehanna River to connect Aberdeen with Fredericktown on the opposite bank. This bridge remained in use until 1903 when it was replaced by the Cumberland Parkway Bridge which crosses over I-95 just south of downtown Aberdeen. Aberdeen became an independent town on December 15, 1824 when it seceded from Fredericktown Township and merged with nearby Calverton Township. The first mayor of Aberdeen was Alexander Macdonald and the first justice of peace was James Herriot (1827-30). He also served as treasurer of Prince George's County from 1830 to 1835 and as president pro tempore of the General Assembly from 1840 to 1843

By 1860, Aberdeen had become an incorporated town with its own government. It experienced rapid growth during World War II as many local businesses contributed to Allied efforts against fascism in Europe.
