In 1924, Aberdeenshire Township was formed out of parts of Prince George's County east of downtown (including Aberdeen). This gave Aberdeen more control over its own affairs than it had ever had before and helped make it one of the most vibrant towns in Prince George's County. On July 1, 1985, Aberdeen gained city status when it joined Washington D.C.. On December 2nd of that year residents voted by referendum to annex portions of neighboring Frederick County which also included several small communities within Aberdeen including Belleair Court Gardens; Brownstown; Clearwater; Eastwood; Greenbelt; Highland Park; Indian Head Park; Kenilworth Estates;; Loganville Heights;; Moorefield Heights;; New Meadow Heights;; Old Meadow Heights.; Roslyn ;Saddleback Hills.; Smithsonian Hills.; Takoma Park.; Willowbrook Village

Aberdeen is a census-designated place in western Maryland, United States. It is located on the Potomac River and has a population of 8,898. The Aberdeen Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.
