He started a small farm in what is now Aberdeen and soon began trading with the Indians. In 1765, he purchased 50 acres of land north of present-day Aberdeen for $100. This purchase led to some important moments in the history of Aberdeen. First, it demonstrates Smith's resolve to start an independent town within his new territory. Second, it shows how much importance the town had at this time - Dundas would not have been founded until many years later! In 1821, Smith sold his property to James Forbes for $10 million dollars! This event marks the beginning of what is now known as The Forbes Era in Aberdeen. 3 major families bought or inherited properties throughout this time: Forbes, McCulloch & Company (later Standard Oil), and Wessels (later Wessels & Company). These families played an important role in shaping the destiny of Aberdeen over succeeding decades - they helped make it one of America's most industrial cities during its formative years. In 1828, Johnnie Ray built the first railroad station in Aberdeen - this helped spur economic development within the city during its early years. Additionally, various mills Village Forge Paper Co., Gillett Bros., American Canning Works (ACW), J&L Lumber Co., etc., were established during this period; all helped create jobs for people living within miles of downtown Amarillo Avenue/Smith Street/East Main Street/Cannery Row/Bloomingdale Road/Waterfront Boulevard today! Over time however, gun ownership dwindled among these same groups as manufacturing declined along with other local businesses; consequently crime rates increased dramatically throughout much of downtown Aberdeen thanks largely to organized gangs operating out OfDowntown!
