During World War II various types of munitions were created to support American troops on battlefields around the world (including incendiary shells). Aberdeen's history dates back to 1792 when it was called "Athol" after Athol House, a Loyalist proprietor's house in nearby Chestertown. The first settlers arrived in early 1792 and named their new town Athol after Athol House on Chestertown Road, which they located about two miles east of present-day Aberdeen on then-undeveloped land that forms much of today's Aberdeen Township. From its inception until 1830, Athol consisted of a single family farmers' settlement with just six residents; however by 1847 it had grown to over eighty families with an estimated total population nearing one thousand people. In 1847, following the creation of Montgomery County as a result of the Organic Act of 1850, Aberdeen became its county seat and began to develop as an important commercial center for northwestern Maryland due to its location at the intersection of three major routes: Ulysses S. Grant Boulevard (now known as George Washington Highway), Route 66 (now Interstate 95) and Courtland Street (now Patapsco Avenue). By 1900 almost all farm production within Aberdeen and surrounding counties had been supplanted by manufacturing interests such as cigars and paper products; this changed abruptly with World War II when munitions production took off in northern Maryland due to wartime demand from Europe During World War II military housing was developed along North Patterson Avenue nearpresent-day Thurgood Marshall High School so that service members could be housed close by while their homes were reconstructed or rebuilt elsewhere in north Baltimore City following bombing raids during that war. This housing development also included what is now known as Soldier Field football field which opened on November 8th 1944
