The mill produced flour for local businesses and feed for horses used to pull wagons down Main Street to get flour from the miller’s house each day. From this early beginning, our community has been based on agriculture with some Manufacturing also taking place over time including: A clothing company that manufactured suitcases; A bakery that made pies; A harness shop; A printing press; A blacksmith shop; An ice cream parlor; And finally a drug store which still exists today! In 1902, when change came to our community with the arrival of Interstate 95 through Cumberland County, Westbrook-on-the-Hudson became one of many communities along I 95 who experienced growth due to interstate commerce. One of the first things that new residents noticed about their new home were all those big billboards advertising cars/trucks/motorcycles/boats etc., right outside their doors! All these ads lured people into starting their own businesses here in our beautiful town! That’s how we got started as an industrial town with many successful ventures such as: KFC restaurants – opening up shop here soon after I95 went through town (now closed); Sheetmetal products being made here from recycled materials until it stopped production around 1990 – still produces high quality products today thanks to our vibrant community spirit! Plus other businesses such as: Home Depot – they opened up shop next door soon after too! This has led to many memories for locals and visitors alike at both local events like Fourth of July parades or state fairs etc.; And also more distant events like Hurricane Sandy Affecting us hard but not lasting long enough for us to lose any business!!!!!! We have always been proud of our community spirit even during tough times like during Katrina when almost everything within sight went out!!! Our citizens banded together immediately after landfall making donations (and later purchasing items from stores open), setting up generators (which they stored inside homes), helping out FEMA officials with tasks such as stocking food supplies etc., Then coming back stronger than ever just weeks later!!!!! What an amazing example our citizens exhibited even under difficult circumstances!!!!! Thank you so much for your support throughout these years!!!!!!!!

The population of the town increased rapidly during the early 19th century due to its location at the junction of two wagon routes and its easy access to markets. In 1840, an sawmill was built in Westbrook. During World War II, Westbrook served as one of several military posts along the Atlantic coast from 1942 to 1945. Afterward, it declined somewhat until it regained some importance as an agricultural center during the 1970s and 1980s. During that time period, it also achieved notoriety for having been home to both Thompsons Supermarket and Kidderminster fabrication company.
