Westbrook, Maine is a small town in Penobscot County, Maine, United States. It is the only municipality in Penobscot County and it was formed on February 15, 1853 from parts of the towns of Westbrook and East Millinocket. The population in 2010 was 469. Westbrook is located on the southwestern border of Penobscot County and lies south of Waterville. The first settlers to what is now Westbrook were those who came overland from Canada in 1802. They were led by Captain John Smith and his party which included his son David. The first house that was built in what is now Westbrook was probably named Green Hill after Colonel Green's farm at Green Hill near modern-day Bristol, Maine. In 1810, John Fenton built a cabin on Pond Road about one mile east of present-day Westbrook. This was the first permanent settler in what is today Westbrook and the first white person to live there permanently. The town began as a community called Westmillinocket because most of its early growth took place around Westmill River which ran through it. The river served as their water supply and also provided access to other villages in Penobscot County for fishing and trade purposes including East Millinocket where many people gathered during winter months for sledding trips down the icefields outside of town). On February 15, 1853, part of the communities of Westbrook (including East Millinocket) merged with that located nearby Willimantic to form the new Town of Weston which had a total population of 205 residents at its incorporation date; this number decreased over time due to various factors such as dirt road construction Projects that blocked direct access to Routes 19B & 19C from Weston while they improved conditions within their own communities), but increased when roads were opened up connecting all these settlements into one large area known as "the metropolis".
