Westbrook is located on the Penobscot River near its confluence with theBangor Inlet and its small airport. The first permanent settler in what is now Westbrook was Nicholas Merrill in 1794. The town was named after General John Westbrook who fought in the American Revolution and died at Yorktown Battlefield in Virginia on October 12, 1781. The current name of Weston originated when one man suggested that it be used for a road out to Bangor Bay from where boats could transport goods upriver to market. In 1814, David Sibley built a log cabin on Westport Hill which became the first post office in what is now Westbrook. It served until 1821 when it moved to Easton where it remained until 1835 when it moved again to its present location east of Main Street. The first school in Westbrook was built by Reverend Ebenezer Perkins in 1828-29 and operated for two years before being closed due to money troubles which led to an economic downturn that affected many communities throughout Maine during this time period. A new school building was constructed between 1830 and 1840 by Revd Amos Fenton which became known as Bowdoin School House after Bowdoin University which had opened nearby that year. The first store open in what is now Westbrook wasestablished by James (Jimmie) Newell around 1845 while he operated a grocery store at 406 Main Street which later became known as Newells Drug Store Henry Morrison started operations as a general store on Main Street opposite Newells Drug Store about 1870 and continued operation until his death about 1912 William Hildebrand opened his bakery on South Park Avenue about 1880 In 1911, local resident Artur Ziegler established Hildebrand's Drive-In restaurant across from High School south of Broadway . This restaurant remains open today with over 100 years of business .
Waterloo was the first town in what is now Westbrook, Maine. It was founded by Pierre du Pont in 1795 as a fur trading post on the Penobscot River. Du Pont named it after his father, George Washington DuPont. In 1812, the town became a part of Massachusetts and was renamed for General James K. Polk.
