After the war, slower growth followed as businesses outside of agriculture pivoted towards services such as transportation and health care jobs within town limits while some new businesses opened up around the waterfront area that now houses groceries, restaurants and nightlife venues like The Anchor Inn & Pub lightheartedly called "the Landing." By Tom S. Allardyce In the town of Westbrook, Maine, there is a relic that has been around for over 180 years. The community built a small cemetery in 1833 to bury their dead. The cemetery remains today and is known as the Westbrook Cemetery. The first settlers in Westbrook were farmers who arrived in 1794. The town was named after Sir George Westbrook, an English gentleman who donated land to the village. The town began to grow rapidly during the 1800s due to its location on the border of two states and its natural resources such as coal and lumber. In 1898, the new state of Maine was created and Westbrook became part of it. The population of Westbrook increased significantly during this time because of jobs available in newfangled states like Maine. However, by 1920, when veteran soldiers from World War I settled in Westbrook, things changed quickly for the townspeople. During World War II, many people left for military service because they believed that war would define America’s future. When hostilities ended, many people returned to their towns but some stayed behind because they still felt that war had something special about it – it was a chance to make a difference in somebody else’s life sized or less than their own. After World War II ended, many factories closed down and workers lost their jobs which caused problems for local businesses and schools alike. In 1969, when General Motors announced plans to close several plants across America including one in Hammondstown (near Boston), locals responded with protests until GM relented and agreed not to close any more plants until better times came along – something that hasn’t happened yet! In 1975-1976 local residents successfully opposed efforts by then-Governor John Baldaccito (D) to develop what would become downtown Crossing Point into an expensive commercial district with high rents while failing at every turn; only after months of public outcry did he relent and allow development! Finally!, following more than 15 years without much progress on Forward Street between Main Street/Waterfront Drive & US 1 could be seen: civic engagement finally caught up with organized business interests! A streetcar line was proposed but never built; infrastructure investments have always been slow due largely to lack of funding rather than opposition! One must appreciate how significant these events were given how fast changes can happen within small communities such as ours!
The town of Westbrook, Maine was founded in 1837 by Cornishman Daniel Westbrook. The town quickly became a center for shipbuilding and commerce, and its economy grew steadily until the early 1900s. In 1938, the town was renamed after Russell Wilson, then-president of the United States.
