Westbrook, Maine is a small town in central Maine, located about 25 miles east of Portland and 20 miles north of Brunswick. The population was 1,681 at the 2010 census. Westbrook was first settled in 1836 by Congregationalists from New Hampshire. The original name of the settlement was Westborough but it changed to Westbrook in 1847 because of confusion with another town called Westbrook in Massachusetts. The land that now makes up Westbrook was donated to the town by John Broughton in 1848. In 1867, a post office wasestablished at Westbrook and remained until 1915 when it moved to Bangor. A store and hotel were built on Main Street in 1898 before being replaced by the present-day courthouse building which opened in 1907. In 1916, Westbrook became the site of one of America's earliest air raid shelters when two hospitals were converted into air raid shelters using surplus munitions from World War I. The shelters served as a home for local women during World War II and were also used as administrative buildings for the town government until they were destroyed by fire in 1957. Today, Westbrook is a small community with a vibrant history that can be enjoyed on its own or visited with friends while exploring nearby Bangor or Portlandia respectively.

On July 1, 1908, parts of what are now East Brunswick Township and West Longmeadow Township were annexed into Westbrook. As part of Maine's effort to attract new businesses and residents during the 1920s, Westbrook became an important center for trucking and manufacturing industries such as deep-sea fishing gear company Gulf Fishery & Lumber Company and steel production by US Steel Corporation. A state highway (Route 123) was built through town in 1928 connecting it with Bangor and Augusta via Boston. The highway was abandoned in 1967 when Interstate 84 bypassedtown In recent years, residents have turned their attention to redevelopment projects downtown which include mixed-use buildings including a library/theater complex along with retail space that is home to several restaurants and nightlife venues
