When firearms were first introduced to Westbrook in 1828, there was no hat market for them. That changed when one entrepreneur, John Chouteau, started manufacturing pistols and other weapon accessories out of a small shop on Main Street. The business quickly grew and by 1830, Chouteau had opened a second store on Prospect Street. In 1832, he began selling rifles and shotguns as well. By 1835, the company’s name had changed to Chouteau & Sons Firearms Manufacturing Company. By 1840, the company had become one of the leading firearms dealers in Maine. It continued to grow throughout the 19th century and by 1870 it was serving customers from all over the state. One of its most famous customers was General George Custer who purchased guns from Chouteau in 1887 while stationed at Fort Riley in Kansas City, Missouri. In 1898, Chouteau & Sons merged with two other companies to form what is now Remington Arms Company Incorporated (RAIC). RAIC became one of America’s leading gunmakers and wholesalers during the 20th century. It continues to operate today as a subsidiary of Smith & Wesson Corporation (SWC). In 1934-1935 Remington Arms Company produced “The Model 10 Starfire Pistol” which became highly influential within American law enforcement circles because it allowed officers to carry sidearms without fear of being arrested or charged with carrying an unloaded firearm into a public place. During World War II, RAIC manufactured munitions including artillery shells and aviation gasoline bombs used by Allied forces in Europe. After the war ended in 1945, many employees left RAIC for new opportunities within SMITH & WESSON CORPORATION but some key veterans founded their own firearms dealership called Browning Arms Ltd., which still operates today in Westbrook – just down the street from where John Chouteau operated his original shop back in 1830!

One major attraction to Westbrook is its wide variety of museums including the Museum of Fine Arts, which features art from throughout history; the First Congregational Church; and Park Hill Cemetery where many notable citizens are buried including President Ulysses S Grant and Mayor James Fenton

It consisted of a large bandanna or cloth piece around the neck with a brim that reached to within an inch of the brow, and had a small hole in it at one side to allow passage of light rays.
Westbrook was a small town in Maine during the 1800s. It was located on the banks of the Penobscot River and had a population of about 350 people at its peak. The town was founded in 1795 by General John Westbrook, who helped lead the Expedition to Crown Point during King George III's War. The town developed around two cotton plantations that were run by General Westbrook's family. In 1815, Colonel James Purdy bought one of these plantations and moved the entire community to it. The town experienced some significant growth after 1815, when it became the site of a sawmill and gristmill that were built by Purdy and his wife, Ann McKay. These mills produced goods for local merchants and used local resources to produce their products. Additionally, Westbrook served as an important stop on the Underground Railroad during the 1820s and 1830s because it was one of the few villages in New England that allowed fugitive slaves to stay within its borders. In 1853, Westbrook merged with nearby Calais to form a new city called Calais-Westbrook. This merger caused some employment problems because both towns had different demographics and economies. However, Calais eventually regained its former prominence as a commercial center due to its location on Route 1A (now Interstate 95) and its proximity to other larger towns in Maine. Since 1970, WCS has been part of Augusta, Georgia; however, many aspects of daily life remain similar between WCS and traditional Maine values such as hard work ethic among locals and support for agriculture among farmers statewide
Westbrook was founded in 1795 by General John Westbrook. The town became a part of the United States in 1836. In 1898, it was settled by Danish Americans and it is still home to a large Danish American community today.
