The city limits encompass most ofPenobscot County except for three small parcels which are located within Acadia National Park: Cascades National Park to the north and east; Hammondsport Naval Air Station to the south; and Mount Desert Island to the west. In 1851 the town voted to become an incorporated municipality, and by 1865 it had a population of 4,000 people. In 1897 the town became part of Portland when Maine became a state.
