Westbrook, Maine is a town in Hancock County, Maine, United States. The population was 559 at the 2010 census. Westbrook was established in 1837 and named for General George Washington Westbrook of Hingham, Massachusetts. The first post office in Westbrook was established on December 3, 1837. The first school to be built in Westbrook was a one-room log cabin which served as the schoolhouse from 1837 to 1840. A new frame building was erected in 1840 and became known as the Public School House. It served as the town's primary educational institution until 1861 when it became an academy under the direction of Colonel James Fenton. In 1861, it replaced Pembroke Academy as the main high school for students in Hancock County. In 1865, Westbrook became part of what would become Bangor County and continued to serve as its primary educational institution until 1936 when it merged with Gorham Academy into Bangor State College. In 1937, Westbrook again became part of what would become Hancock County and ceased serving as its primary educational institution; however, it continues to be home to Gorham Academy continuing education campus which is now known as Maine Community College system headquarters located on Main Street NW corner Third Avenue NE
Westbrook was founded in 1795 by Captain John Westbrook and his wife, Rebecca. The town was named after Capt. Westbrook's ancestor, who settled in the area in 1697. In 1819, the name of the town was changed to Westbrooksburg after General David Stark's victory at Battle of Gettysburg. The town experienced growth during the 19th century as it became a center for trade and agriculture. In 1873, the first railroad reached Westbrook and it became an important transportation hub for goods across Maine. The population of Westbrook increased rapidly during the 19th century and by 1910 it had reached 100 residents. During World War II, Westbrook played a significant role in munitions production and served as a military base for both Canada and United States troops. After World War II, the economy declined but new businesses started up in the town during the late 20th century. Today, Westbrook is an active community with a wide variety of cultural events happening throughout the year.
