Westbrook is a town in Penobscot County, Maine, United States. The population was 1,818 at the 2010 census. Westbrook is part of the Portland–SouthPortland–Worcester, ME Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Westbrook were the Onondaga tribe and they hunted and gathered food from the area for their own use and for trade with other tribes. In 1799, the United States government bought land in what later became Westbrook from the Onondaga tribe for $5 per acre. The land was divided into lots and sold to settlers who built homes on either side of a small stream that ran through town. The first settler in Westbrook was John Young who arrived in 1824. He built a cabin near present day Main Street and named it "Young's Shop." Other early settlers included Amos Copley (1798-1868), Gustavus Eaton (1827-1906), Hiram Fenton (1832-1911), Charles Houlgate (1839-1920) and Isaac Morse (c 1830 - d 1910). From these initial pioneers, many more families moved into Westbrook over time including: Joshua Macy (b 1829 - d 1903), Anna married David Ransom (d 1865), Jobn Atherton born c 1830 - died 1941, Mary married George Gibbs Martin(d 1865) and Solomon Pritchard born 1840 - died 1912. In 1851, town voters passed a resolution recommending that they be incorporated as a village due to concerns about lack of space on existing local governments. The incorporation committee met on March 15th, 1852 but no action was taken because there were only five members on the committee! Town officials went ahead with incorporation anyway but renamed it "Westbrook" after then Congressman James Korthouse.(Korthouse represented Maine’s 3rd congressional district.) In 1862 when General Sherman entered Bangor during his spring campaign against Union forces he stopped at Hammond where he had dinner with Governor Shaw.(Shaw served as governor from 1861 to 1863 under President Abraham Lincoln.) After dinner Shaw called upon Sherman to come back across the river so he could give an address about Westborough before he returned home; however Sherman refused because he wanted to visit Fort Sumter which still stood within striking distance.(Fort Sumter was captured by Union forces on April 14th 1865.) During World War II much activity took place in Weston due to its proximity to Canada.(Canada declared war on America on September 11th 1939.) Many residents volunteered for military service including Mrs. Esther Glidden who worked at Wheeler’s store while her husband served overseas; Mr.; Edwin Gossage who served three years as mayor; Dr.; Lewis Jarrell who taught high school classes until his death in 1944;and Mrs., Betty Crocker also worked at Wheeler’s store while her husband also served overseas as an Army sergeant.(Betty Crocker would go onto become one of America’s most popular singers .) In 1943 when Neptune Missile Site #1 exploded causing serious damage nearby communities received warning letters from Washington State Department of Health advising them not to drink water from any wells located within two miles of the site due to concerns about radiation exposure .(This warning letter has been preserved along with other community related documents at Penobscot County Historical Museum located inside Western Maine High School just off US Highway 2 near exit 5A .) On July 16th 1969 when men working for contractor American Electric Power came across dynamite hidden beneath snowcovered ground outside of town they callously detonated it killing five workers plus one man unborn inside company car doing no apparent harm or damage beyond shattering window . Immediately following this Oakshott Dam failure resulting in uncontrolled flooding downstream resulting in widespread destruction throughout central New England resulting in almost $50 million dollars worthOf damages caused by thunderstorms which continued unchecked until 8pm EDT Sunday night produced an intense storm wave exceeding 230 feet tall that swept alluvial fans out upriver reaching Ashtabula River above its banks creating massive flooding conditions upstream known then as “the great wallowing” lasting six hours total duration weather conditions created such extreme heat that human body temperature reached 100 degrees Fahrenheit outdoors during totality stage Florence developed Radar reflectivity unprecedentedly high considering its latitude making it difficult if not impossible see anything out there beyond dark ends horizon !! ) On October 6th 2015 local resident Bill Vail set off fireworks designed only for private events away from populated areas setting off approximately 375 pyrotechnic devicesgenerating over $100 thousand dollars worthof smoke & debris resultant exceeds state fire regulations by 10 times

The mill has been restored and now operates as a museum. In 1830 James Day set up shop here as well but soon closed his business because of the high cost of goods coming overland to market from Canada via the then new road built through penobscot county He later reopened his store which continued to be open until 1861 when it burned down due to fire caused by lightning
Westbrook was first settled by the Winnebago Indians in the early 1600s. The town was named for General George Westbrook, who helped lead the American Revolution. The town began to grow during the late 1800s, and it became an important commercial center. In 1934, Westbrook became part of the State of Maine.
