Westbrook, Maine is a town in Penobscot County, Maine, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bangor-Pensacola metropolitan area. Westbrook was first settled in 1795 by John Westbrook and his family. The land that now makes up Westbrook was purchased from the Indians by Capt. William Heath in 1824. In 1826, he built a mill on the river and named it after himself, though it later changed its name to Penobscot Mill Company (now Penobscot Mills). In 1828, Captain Heath sold about two-thirds of the town to John Westbrook's son David for $2,000 cash and 10 acres of land west of the mill site. David built a house on what is now Main Street and named it "Westbrook". The rest of the town was laid out into lots starting with Samuel Aiken's lot on Sunrise Avenue in 1830 and going north until they reached Capt. Heath's lot on Park Avenue in 1836 which became home to both stores and homes until 1951 when First Baptist Church moved into its current location on Park Avenue. The first school in Westbrook was organized as Westborough Academy School District #1 on November 14th, 1850 by trustee Drury Pemberton with Wm Burcham as teacher/director/builder; Addison Cushing as treasurer; Jno Fenton as superintendent for two years; Geo Hargrave for one year; Thos Moulton for one year; Amasa Parker for one year; Chas Putnam for three years . On January 10th 1861 trustees James Smeaton & Ebenezer Morse organized Schools #4 & 5 under new name “Penobscot Academy” with Geo Hargrave (Superintendent) as director/teacher/ builder assisted by Elisha Emerson who also acted as financial advisor . There were 3 teachers: Mrs Emerson (primary), Mr Hargrave (secondary), Mrs Putnam (tertiary). After only 1 ½ years there were 2Students: Startin Elisha Emerson left to start her own academy On October 15th 1865 Trustees Ezra Tilton & Isaac Morse organized schools #6 & 7 under new name “Penobscot Female College” with Mrs Amelia Hearn (& Young) acting director/teacher& building assistant aided by George Goodwin who also acted as financial advisor There were 4 Teachers: Miss Hearn(primary), Mrs Goodwin (& Young), Lieut Col Beal(secondary), Lt Col Beal (& wife) had 2 students each while Mrs Emerson taught 3 students full time
