Westbrook is located in Cumberland County and is part of the Portland-Vancouver Metropolitan Statistical Area. It lies on the Penobscot River at its confluence withthe Moose River. The first permanent settler in Westbrook was John Weston who arrived in 1795. In 1802, he built a grist mill on the river and named it after himself, Westbrook Abbey. The mill continued to be used until it was destroyed by fire in 1865. A new mill was built on the same site in 1868 and again operated until it also burned down in 1865. The community name honors both John Weston and his son Amos Weston II (1820-1900), an early settler who founded a post office here in 1877, which still exists. In 1898, one of two bridges over the Penobscot River spanned by Westbrook were completed; this bridge became known as the "Willis Bridge". The other bridge was replaced by a more recent structure that collapsed during Hurricane Ivan on October 24, 2005; this caused $1 million worth of damage to both bridges. The town's post office moved from where it currently stands to its current location near what is now Hammonds Falls Road (now Hammonds Falls Boulevard) in 1922 after being established east of present day town limits at what is now Atkinson Road (then called Pleasant Valley Road). The old post office building still stands today as part of the Westbrook Historical Museum Complex . The first store opened for business here on Main Street in 1903 and served as a grocery store until 1978 when it closed due to lack of customers or competition from larger stores within walking distance of town limits. One hundred years later, another store has reopened as an apartment complex across from Walmart . It is the county seat of Penobscot County and part of the Bangor–Biloxi metropolitan area. The town was founded by English settlers in 1837 as Westborough on land acquired from the Saco River tribe. In 1851, it became part of Bath Township. When Bath Township was dissolved in 1867, Westbrook became its own township and remained so until 1937 when it merged with neighboring East Millinocket to formPenobscot County. In 1915, Westbrook propertyowner James Hickey built a dam across the Saco River to generate power for his farmsteads and house trailers on what is now known as Main Street. The dam remains in operation today as Westbrook Hydroelectric Station. In 1951, Westbrook High School opened its doors and served students from kindergarten through eighth grade untilgrades nine through twelve were transferred to Bangor-Biloxi Middle School in 1984. In 2001, Westbrook voters passed a $30 million bond issue that funded various infrastructure projects including new roads and bridges; renovated buildings such as school administration offices and civic center; installation of an updated fire department; and replacement of aging water pipes throughout the community.
