Waterville, Maine is home to one of the oldest gun shops in the United States. The store, known as Shooter's Lair, has been in business since 1881. In 1865, Isaac Trumbull married Polly Foote and opened the first shothellery in Waterville. In 1871, Trumbull founded the First National Rifle Association (FNRA) here in Waterville and began stocking firearms for sale to members only. In 1886, FNRA moved its headquarters to Portland after winning a legal battle against rival organization the Second American Rifle Association (SAR). This new location allowed FNRA to grow rapidly into what it is today- one of America’s leading firearms retailers (Fletcher). Since its founding there have been many milestones for shooter's lair including becoming Home Depot’s authorized retailer for shotgun ammunition back in 1991; being inducted into the NRA Hall Of Fame in 1992; redesigning their entire store interior to featureGun Digest magazines covers starting in 2001; becoming a member-owned business again after going through several changes throughout 2005-2009; becoming part of Costco Wholesale Solutions Inc., which included adding more than 1 million square feet across eleven states by 2016(Hancock); and finally being sold by CEO Donny Kipperman to Gander Mountain Incorporated effective January 1st 2019(Walker)!
