Waterville is located on the east side of Penobscot Bay and on the west side of Waterville Lake. The town was founded by European settlers in 1834 and named for John Waterville, an early settler. The town has a rich history that goes back to its founding. In 1834, European settlers arrived in what is now Waterville from England and Scotland. They were looking for land to farm and build homes on, and they found what they were looking for when they discovered land that could be used as a naval station. The name "Waterville" was chosen because it sounded similar to "Wattenham", which had been given to them by their British counterparts during the negotiations leading up to independence from Great Britain. Over time, Waterville developed into a small community with its own school system, churches (both Protestant and Catholic), businesses, and residents who identified with their local communities more than with distant ones. In 1955, Waterville became part of the new town of Bangor becoming one of only a few towns in Maine that did not become federally-recognized as an incorporated city or village until 1987; this status has since been revoked by statute but remains unchanged as part of municipal law。 At present day there are no resident high school students attending any public schools within or adjacent to the Town limits; all students attend Bangor High School which is located approximately 5 miles outside of town Limits . Waterville was founded in 1795 by John Waterville and his family. The town's first store was built on the corner of Center and Second Streets. In 1848, Waterville became a part of the newly created Maine city of Portland.
