Waterville, Maine is a small town located in northern Maine. The population of Waterville was 727 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cumberland County. As of the 2000 census, there were 5,653 people living in Waterville. Of these, 3,959 lived in the town itself and 2,836 lived in surrounding communities. The first optic devices were created by Reverend John Davenport in 1802 when he began manufacturing lenses for a new telescope that he had invented. The first successful optical instrument was built by Professor Samuel Morse and Dr. Charles Babbage in 1837 using an optoelectronic device called a "telegraphy camera." In 1865, Edwin Ayer developed an early form of electronic equipment that used light as its carrier medium. He named his invention "Annie" after his daughter then-5 years old. This device became known as the Ayer Electronic Amplifier or ACE (an acronym for An electron Amplifier). ACE was later adopted by several other inventors and scientists to create various types of electronic equipment including radios and televisions. In 1932, United States president Franklin D Roosevelt made a speech at Bowdoin University calling for development of new technologies to improve communication between America's military forces and their allies around the world during World War II. Roosevelt declared that optics should be one such technology because it could be used to provide improved battlefield visibility for troops on distant battlefields while also facilitating communication between commanders on both sides of conflict; this would help reduce casualties on both sides while achieving strategic objectives! He went on to say: "I believe we can make some very pretty important advances not only with our eyes but with our ears too if we keep up this effort". In 1938 inventor Elmer Haskins published what is considered to be the world's first practical example of an electronic interferometer which could measure interference patterns caused by multiple objects moving through air at different speeds within certain limits – this helped him develop radar applications! The invention would soon become common throughout Europe and North America. In 1938, another woman named Elisabeth Zimmermann created what is now known as Zimmermann's Glass Window Insurance. This was an insurance policy that allowed people to protect their windows from being broken by thieves or other damage while they were away.
Waterville is a town in Cumberland County, Maine, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. The town is on the Waterville River. It was founded in 1793 and incorporated as a village in 1828. In 1851, it moved to its present location on the river. The first settlers of Waterville were farmers who came from Massachusetts in 1793. They built their first house on the site of present day Waterville Elementary School in 1800. The town name derived from an early settler, Joshua Barnes, who named his farm "Waterville". In 1828, Waterville became an incorporated village and soon developed into a major trading center for area farmers because of its location along the river and its access to markets near Boston and Montreal. By 1850, Waterville had become one of the most important towns in Cumberland County and was home to over 1,000 residents. The growth of industry during the 19th century caused significant destruction to many homes and businesses in downtown Waterville; however, many people were able to rebuild quickly using local materials and labor.During World War II, Waterville played a critical role in providing food for troops stationed throughout New England and Canada as well as civilian morale-boosting programs such as Operation Crossroads which helped Japanese nationals escape imprisonment during World War II. It also served as host city for both the Maine State Fairgrounds (1929–1935)and Queen's University's Agriculture Department Experiment Station (1945). In recent years, much progress has been made downtown including renovation of several historic buildings including Watervliet Hall which houses municipal offices as well as classrooms used by various schools within town limits; construction of new streetscape features such as sidewalks; installation of public works facilities such as water fountains; development of marketing districts that allow businesses within town limits to sell products directly to consumers outside town limits; and installation of new streetlights making downtown more visible at night while still providing illumination necessary for daily activities outdoors
