Waterville, Maine is a town in Penobscot County, Maine, United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Portland-Vancouver-Hants Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Waterville is derived from the word "wat" which means "place," and "verhalte" meaning "old house." The first settler in what is now Waterville was Augustus Pondman in 1821. In 1825, John Fenton bought land east of present day Waterville from Abram Morse for $1,000. In 1827, James Goudreau settled a tract of land on the south side of the Piscataqua River between present day Waterville and Auburn. Goudreau's farm continued to be used until 1937 when it was purchased by Leslie Aiken who donated it to the town government along with some other property. The first store opened in Waterville on December 6th, 1828 by Ebenezer Brown and his son Amos Haddad Brown. The store was located near present day Broadway and Main Streets. That same year saw the opening of a school which taught kindergarten through eighth grade as well asoancting new citizens to this community that had only recently begun to form itself around its two small churches (the Methodist Episcopal Church and Congregationalist) as well as its few businesses including a blacksmith shop and an inn which served refreshments during celebrations like Christmas or New Year's Eve. During prohibition efforts in 1920-21 there were several raids on local liquor stores; one such raid took place on December 12th when about 30 men raided Three Rivers Lumber Company warehouse north of town after learning that inventory had been seized amounting to nearly $3,000 worth of whiskey! One early resident who made significant contributions to Waterville over many years was Dragoer Jorgensen who served as Justice of Penobscot County from 1902 until his death in 1934 while still living hereabouts! He went on to become an Associate Justice on the Maine Supreme Judicial Court from 1936 until his retirement in 1986! On July 5th 1915 Wm Halsey Emmons became President pro tempore (president for interim purposes)of the Maine State Senate for District 3 following William Cushing's resignation effective September 15th due to ill health - he would serve into 1916 vacated by Mr Cushing's successor George Sargent! During World War I he enlisted with Captain Dyer's Company Eighty Third Massachusetts Infantry Regiment serving overseas from 1917 until 1919 before being discharged because he developed chronic heart disease called carpal tunnel syndrome caused by repetitive strain injuries received working with hand tools outdoors... After discharge he returned home where he resumed carpentry work at his previous business conducting various projects throughout his home country making him one of Enterprise’s most successful entrepreneurs during that time frame! When statehood came about he again put forth considerable effort becoming president (interim)of both houses providing leadership and direction during those pivotal years prior thereto... Upon passage of chapter 179B May 16 th 1922 which provided for Statehood under new rules set forth therein Dragoer Jorgensen once again offered his services rendered both Houses resulting in him receiving honorary membership within minutes!!! Now long gone but not forgotten by those associated with “The Town Hall” since their very first meeting taking place January 4 th 1865 inside what is now Old Market Square our forefathers would always attend religious services conducted therein wearing their Sunday best !!
