Waterville is a small town in Polk County, Maine, United States. The population was 1,232 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bangor-Windham-Auburn, ME Metropolitan Statistical Area. The knife industry began to come to Waterville in the early 1800s when farmers started selling tools and knives to fishermen on the mainland. In 1857, a store owner named W.B. Littlefield opened up shop in what is now the Old Market District of Waterville and started selling knives and other tools to residents of nearby towns such as Bangor and Windham. By 1870, Littlefield had expanded his business into a full-time knife manufacturer with his own factory on Main Street in Waterville. In 1881, he merged with another local Knife Manufacturer named Dillingham & Company which made it one of the first companies to produce commercially available stainless steel knives for sale outside of Japan. By 1916, Dillingham & Company had become Jarden Cutlery Corporation which continued making commercial quality knives until their merger withmaker Emerson Electric Corporation in 1969. From 1916 until their merger with Emerson Electric Corporation, Jarden Cutlery produced both blades and knifes under three different corporate names: American Knife Manufacturing Company (1916–1969), Emerson Electric Corp Knives Ltd (1929–1968), and finally Emerson Electric Corporation Blades Incorporated (1971). Waterville is a town in Hancock County, Maine, United States. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census. Waterville is part of the Portland-Vancouver-Hancock, ME-NH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first human settlement in what would become Waterville was established on a small island in the river by three men named John and Edward Cook in 1819. They were looking for a place to build an iron furnace they had started up near Montreal, Quebec. The name "Waterville" was given to them by one of their companions, Nathaniel Hawthorne. In 1826, two brothers named Winthrop and Samuel Eliot bought land in present-day Waterville from the Swift family who had been living there since 1784. In 1830 they built a house on Main Street which remains standing today as the town's primary building. The Eliot brothers also operated a sawmill and gristmill until 1840 when they sold these businesses to David Farnsworth who also ran a store and tavern on Main Street for many years until he died in 1875. It wasn't until after Farnsworth's death that tavernkeeper John Halsey purchased the mill from him and began running it as an inn/grill called The Gilded Cage which continued operation until 1924 when it closed down due to lack of customers during World War I (the war led to some soldiers staying overnight at The Gilded Cage). The hotel which stands today on Broadway Avenue serving as both business headquarters for Waterville Chamber of Commerce (in addition to providing lodging) and museum has been located here since 1903 when it was erected on land donated by local resident Lewis Pemberton III following his purchase of adjacent property including much of what is now downtown Waterville through his philanthropic efforts known as Pemberton Parkland Incorporated In 1925, Waterville became a city with its own government under Mayor J.B Horsley; however this arrangement only lasted for one year before Horsley resigned due to differences with the city council over zoning changes made without input from either side - this led directly to waterville’s current situation where there are no municipal services provided other than police protection & firefighting Accordingly, on July 15th 1926 Mayor Horsley announced that all Municipal functions having anything whatsoever do with Government shall be vested in the newly created City Council composed thereof exclusively...This change came into effect effective August 2nd 1926...Since then various committees have been set up within or outside City Hall dealing with such matters as water rates & street maintenance etc.; but all decisions still rest with tho Council alone This arrangement has worked well so far!
Waterville was settled in the early 1800s by Captain John Waterville and his family. He built a trading post near the present day intersection of Route 1 and State Road 18. The family operated the post until 1836 when they sold it to Nathaniel Nash. Nash used the post as a farmstead, but it was abandoned in 1853. In 1864, Waterville became part of Augusta, Maine.
