The present day downtown area originated as farmland around what is now the Riverwalk Shopping Center and First Congregational Church; after prohibitionist sentiment increased during World War I (1916-1918), many farmers congregated around this center to opposed alcohol sales within their township boundaries When Prohibition ended in 1933 (a result of the Eighteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution), many farmers returned to alcohol production while others used their land for other purposes such as housing development or open-air markets As more people moved into town during World War II (1939-1945), industry developed along with outlying villages such as Indian Head which served as support shrines for local war industries
