On Saturday, May 12, 1892, the town of Waterville, Maine voted to prohibit firearms in public. This was the first time that a municipality in Maine had done this. The ban lasted until January 1st, 1903.

Waterville is a small town in northern Maine, located on the north bank of the Penobscot River. The population was 693 at the 2010 census. Waterville has been inhabited since ancient times and its earliest known residents are thought to be from Canada. In 1814, Waterville became a part of Massachusetts and in 1828 it became part of Maine. The town was named for Captain John Waterville, who fought with distinction in the American Revolution. The first school in Waterville was built in 1796, and it served as a primary and secondary school until 1899. In 1906, the town's first post office was opened, and it continued to serve as such until 1963. The current post office building was erected in 1917 and is located on Main Street. As of the census of 2000, there were 553 people living inwaterville; however, this number may have increased since then because manyRefugee families have moved into waterville during recent years due toeconomic hardship across much of Northeastern United States Most notably, Waterville has been home to several famous athletes including running back Jerome Bettis (1940-1985), basketball player Julius Erving (1961-2003), swimmer Debbie Reynolds (1941-1994), ice skaters Brian Boitano (1975-present) and Patrick Ewing (1984-1999). Additionally, rugby union player Clive Woodward played his high school football here before playing at Brown University where he won two national championships before becoming an NFL linebacker with Steelers/ Ravens/ Bills
Waterville was founded in 1785 by Captain John Waterville. The town was named for the Waterville River, which flows through it. The first settlers in Waterville were farmers and fishermen. In 1802, a sawmill and gristmill were built in the town. In 1812, the first post office was established in Waterville. In 1865, the townsite of Waterville was platted and became a village. The villages of Easton and Bangor merged into Waterville in 1973.
