Waterville is a small town in western Maine. The population was 653 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Waterville–Foxcroft, Maine Micropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1820 by Captain John Aiken and his wife Abigail, who named it for Waterville, England. The first store in town was opened in 1824 by Capt. John Aiken's father-in-law, Jabez Dunham. In 1860, the Aiken family sold their land to a group of investors led by Amos Kendall and they renamed the town Waterville after Kendall's home state of Vermont. Waterville has been served by its own school system since 1872 when it merged with Foxcroft School District #2. The current name for the school district is Waterville–Foxcroft School District #1 but it will be known as Waterville Schools starting July 1st, 2013 due to an agreement between the two districts that expires on June 30th, 2014
