Waterville, Maine is a small town in Hancock County, Maine. The population was 1,906 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from Waterville Landing on the Saint John River. Waterville is located in the central area of Hancock County and is bordered by the towns of Auburn, Rome, and Portland. The first settler in Waterville was Samuel Prentice who arrived in 1799. He built a cabin on what is now Main Street. By 1829, there were twelve settlers living in Waterville. There were also two stores and one blacksmith shop in Waterville during this time period. In 1854, Major Jesse Dickey donated land to build a courthouse and jail which stood until 1912 when it burned down. In 1892, Drury & Company bought land east of present day Main Street for an agricultural school which became known as State Agricultural College (now University of Maine). The townspeople voted to rename their community Waterville after Dickey’s donation although they did not actually move until 1907 when they moved into their current buildings on Main Street! Most of what we know about Waterville comes from stories passed down through the generations or from local history books that have been published over the years. One such story tells of how a young girl named Laura came to live with her grand parents while she attended college full-time in nearby Auburn. One day while out walking with her grand father, he saw a boatman loading goods onto his boat at Waverly landing downstream from where he lived - so he walked down to meet him and asked if he needed any help getting his goods ashore! From then on, Laura always called herself "Davy's granddaughter" because that is how she got her nickname - Davy had helped her grandfather load his supplies onto his boat! Another interesting note about this era is that most women didn't attend college during this time period; rather they married and started families! This was particularly true for women who wanted to get ahead financially like many women did during this time period! Another historical event that took place near Waterville occurred on November 3rd 1863 when Union General John Custer's forces invaded Hancock County looking for General Nathaniel Banks – which led to much excitement throughout the entire town because many people thought Custer might be coming home!!! It turned out that Custer only went into Hancock County looking for Banks instead!!! He later died fighting at Little Bighorn Creek!!

Waterville was a small, unincorporated town in Hancock County, Maine, United States, until it merged with North Waterville in 1923. The original settlement was on the banks of the Penobscot River and its present location is about two miles northeast of downtown Waterville. The name is derived from a word meaning "a place where there is plenty of water." The first permanent settler in what became Waterville was John Halsey. He and his family arrived around 1795 and built the first homes on the current site of town. In 1823, local farmers petitioned the state government to create an incorporated municipality because they could not farm their land without help. On July 1, 1923, Waterville become one of the towns in Hancock County. Many businesses were established here during the early days of white settlement in Maine: a millinery store opened in 1865, a post office open at least from 1872 through 1888, gristmill operations began in 1892, and breweries began operation beginning around 1903. Many residents also worked outside the community; many people who later settled here were born or raised near Boston or Providence Rhode Island. The mills closed down during World War II but restarted after the war as new manufacturing activity increased demand for flour throughout New England. By 1972, most mills had either closed or been sold off to other businesses including Little Canada Paper Mills which continues to produce flour today at its former site beside Route 20 east of Waterville
