Waterville is located on the southern border of Hancock County and is surrounded by the towns of Brunswick and Auburn on its eastern side and Rockland and Portland on its western side. It is bordered by the town of Easton to the north and east, Knoxville to the south, Gorham to the west, and Penobscot Bay to the northwest. The first settler in Waterville was James Purdy in 1827. He married Margaret Ayer in that year. Waterville became a village in 1853 when it had a population of twenty-one people. The village charter was granted on October 15th of that year. The first postmaster was Wm Hickey who served from November 5th, 1853 until his death on December 16th following an illness which he contracted while serving duty as postmaster. The only industry that ever developed in Waterville was agriculture which produced cornmeal for local markets and flour for local baking purposes until after World War II when mills began operating within minutes of one another across much of Maine making cottonseed oil available for export outside of America at low prices thanks to American production advances during this time period Cartwright Cotton Mills Company Limited) . Other businesses that operated here over time included two general stores (1870s), three livery stables (1890s), four blacksmiths (1910s), three farmers’ markets (1920s-1930s), two banks (1920s-1930s), two gas stations/conveniences store(1960s-1970s), one recycling center (.75 million pounds recycled since 1990) The last full grocery store closed down here around 1984 according to some sources however there were still several convenience stores open through out most if not all blocks until about 1992 or so with only one remaining open now called "Comico's" Nowadays most people just call it "Waterville".
