South Portland, Maine is a town located in Cumberland County, Maine. The population was 5,871 at the 2010 census. South Portland has been inhabited by people for over 350 years and is one of the oldest towns in the state. It became an incorporated town on November 3, 1853. The first settler in what is now South Portland was John Morse who arrived in 1799 and built his cabin on a bluff overlooking the harbor. South Portland's history can be traced back to its founding as a small community earlyrisers did not want to leave their farmlands andilts behind when they came downrange from Boston on the Mayflower. They chose to settle on land that would give them security from possible attack by French and Indian forces along the coast. The town center was platted in 1836 by George Hargrave who named it after himself and two other gentlemen friends- Isaac Watts (counselor to King George III) and Ebenezer Hart (brother of Senator Joseph Hart). The first store opened in 1837 with Wm Fenton as proprietor. In 1840–41, Jno Purdy opened a grocery store which remains open today as Oneida Grocery Company Limited. By 1850, there were six stores providing groceries, four taverns/grills/lodges and one printing office functioning within town limits serving residents of all walks of life including farmers, mechanics, merchants, wharf workers etc.. In 1862 when Castlereagh Bridge was completed across Elizabeth River connecting Brunswick Landing with Falmouth both communities experienced rapid growth due to new opportunities opening up resulting from American Expansionism brought about by Abraham Lincoln's election as President that year In 1865 postmaster James Laughlin purchased three miles of beachfront property extending into present day South Portland from where he could see both harbours while living onshore at Bangorport House Townspeople voted unanimously to incorporate as an incorporated village on November 3rd 1853 under the name "SouthPortland" becoming one of only five such villages established statewide during this period...The first meeting held under this new name resulted in a resolution approving establishment of schools within the village limits followed by discussion regarding building roads and ordinances necessary for Village government...A committee was appointed to prepare plans for erection of a school house which met again soon afterwards but no progress being made no further action appears to have been taken until 1870 when A School House Committee was appointed without any definite programme being adopted…By 1870 there had grown up around SouthPortland some thirty or forty houses…the principal business district lay north-west corner Broad street between Water Street & Market Square
In 1786, the town of South Portland was chartered and named in honor of General John Graves Simcoe. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the Maine-New Brunswick border and its natural resources. In 1814, the town passed an Act of Parliament which recognized as a separate county, Cumberland County, Maine, south of the river Penobscot. This created a rivalry between South Portland and Bangor because each city thought it should have been first. In 1847, a school was built in South Portland and renamed Columbian School after King George III's visit to that city. The first electric streetlight in New England was installed in SouthPortland on March 1, 1892 by J.P. Morgan & Co., successors to Atlantic Edison Company
