South Portland, Maine is a town in Hancock County, Maine, United States. The population was 906 at the 2010 census. South Portland is part of the Cumberland–Portland, ME Metropolitan Statistical Area. The site of the ancient port and later city ofPortland were both located on the south side of present-day South Portland. The area now known as South Portland was first settled by English settlers in 1692 when they founded Nottingham Plantation on what is now State Street. The early years of South Portland were difficult due to Native American raids and a lack of resources. However, over time the town prospered thanks to its location and its people's hard work ethic. In 1824, Plymouth Congregationalist minister John Winnifield built a church in nearby Northborough and started religious services in what would become South Portland. In 1827, local merchants formed a company to buy land for an new city called Portsmouth which would be located east of downtown and north of existing settlements around Portsmouth Harbor. The original town plat included sections for both Portsmouth and South Portland but only Portsmouth became reality because it was annexed by South Portland in 1852 following the railroad's arrival in Maine. During World War II, many businesses within SouthPortland were destroyed or damaged during nationwide bombings including those along State Street which led to the nickname "Bombtown." Despite this setback, business growth resumed after hostilities ended and today many residents consider themselves "southportians" due to their connection to that period in history. One result has been an increase in cultural diversity within the community with residents from all over the world living near each other while still preserving some traditions specific to their home region or country such as cricketing or fishing tournaments being held annually at various venues throughout town center). Today much of downtown has been rebuilt following several rounds of arson attempts targeting commercial properties dating back to at least 2007 when someone set fire to one building causing extensive damage before finally being apprehended; however most core business districts are still without significant damage from these past incidents giving rise to another nickname for town - "Business Town". There have been recent efforts made by Mayor Dan Sullivan (a former state legislator) & City Councilor Peggy Peebles (the chairwoman for Housing/Economic Development) to improve public transportation options within town limits making it easier for locals & tourists alike access surrounding communities without having too much difficulty getting around on foot or bike although there are currently no plans for additional development within town limits since housing prices have already quintupled since 2005!
The town of South Portland, Maine was founded in 1820 by John A. Bergeron and his family. The town's first store was built on the current site of the library in 1830. In 1851, South Portland became part of the newly formed state of Maine. In 1907, the town voted to annex what is now Westbrook. The annexation created a new borough within South Portland and led to the name change in 1928 toSouth Portland Borough. In 1978, SouthPortland Borough merged with Westbrook Township to form the city of South Portland.
