The history of South Portland is diverse and includes periods when it was part of Boston Township (1820-1828), Bangor Township (1830-1872), Cumberland County (1890-1910), Androscoggin County (1920-1930), Knox County (1940-1960) and finally Multnomah County (1970-2000). The economy has changed many times during its history but has always been based around agriculture or fishing as major industries. Today’s economy is dominated by companies such as Nike and Amazon who have moved into the town for their headquarters.
