As industry picked up around Point Judith Beach (near modern day Harbor Beach) other men started developing land further east where they erected mills or set out gardens . By 1870 there were over 50 homes hereabouts with 50 families working at various mills or farms . Some notable residents during this time include: Ezekiel Perry who served as Mayor from 1865-1868; Myron Humphrey who represented Maine’s 1st Congressional District from 1888-1892; Alfred Prentice whose grocery store opened at 5 Main Street in 1898; Clarence Kingdon Woodbury who served as Mayor from 1916-1918; Nathan Wingate Morse (cricket player) played cricket for New England between 1886-1900; women began playing softball here beginning in 1903 when two girls met while playing catch by the side of High School Road
