In 1847, a group of men from South Portland, Maine, started a rifle company in order to purchase and test new rifles. The company was named the Rifle Company of America (RCA) after the first American rifle, which had been imported by the British in 1795. By 1850, a system called “The Vardon projection” was developed by Captain John Vardon of the RCA that allowed shooters to fire off rounds one after the other without having to change their sights. In 1819, when ABBA/D&C Railroad began construction through Cumberland County, it crossed Main Street just south of present day Church Street, forming an important link between South Portland and Bangor (then called Acadia) along with other railway activities which helped createsouthportontown
