The town was first settled in 1784 by Loyalists who abandoned their homes in Canada to come to southern Maine as part of the American Revolution. The Town Meeting decided on Saturday, October 26th, 1784 that “a new town be formed” within present day South Portland Township and this meeting was attended by twelve members including three residents from Canada who had accompanied General Cornwallis during his ill-fated campaign against Washington. In 1802, when it became known that Boston would become the capital of America and be known as New York City, many inhabitants chose to move away from Boston due to their concerns aboutBoston's infrastructure and security risks (Foley). In 1807 South Portland voted unanimously to secede from Hancock County into what is today Bangor County because they felt they were not treated fairly by local officials (Liu). During World War II many businesses were located in downtown South Portland due to its strategic location just outside ofPortland Harbor providing a sheltered anchorage for ships during wartime naval operations. After the war many businesses moved out into buildings along Park Avenue which remain standing today as part of what is now called “The Landing” complex which included both a grocery store and an auto dealership until 1974 when those structures were demolished for redevelopment into what remains today’s Courtyard Marriott hotel (Rideout). In recent years much development attention has been given to SouthPortland with plans for high-rise apartments, retail projects such as a anchor office/multiunit project at 1000 State Street dubbed Gateway Center or possibly even another light rail station in time for an expected 2020 Olympics; however no definitive information exists at this time about any future developments or changes in planening

In 1834, a new bridge across the Merrimack River was built and the name of the parish was changed to South Portland Parish. The parish lost its status as an archdiocese after Quincy, Massachusetts became an independent ecclesiastical province in 1898. In 1960, South Portland Parish merged with other parishes in North Kingstown to form East Falmouth Township.
