South Portland, Maine is a small town located on the coast of Maine. The population of South Portland was 5,898 at the 2000 census. As of the 2010 census, the population had grown to 7,045. In 1925, SouthPortland voters passed a resolution asking Congress for funds to be allotted towards building an airport in town; this request was successful and an airport was built in 1927. At that time, there were only two hospitals within driving distance of South Portland: Saint Joseph’s Hospital (now known as Mercy Health) on Main Street and Women’s Hospital on Commercial Street. Today both hospitals are closed but their medical equipment still remains at SaintJoseph’s which is now part of Eastern Maine Healthcare System In the late 1920s through early 1930s automobiles began entering into popularity throughout America; however, they did not reach proportions that they have today until after World War II when American Motors Corporation started manufacturing cars here in significant quantities beginning around 1947-1948 under license from German auto manufacturer DaimlerChrysler AG . Over time other manufacturers have followed suit with production also taking place at various locations including Alliant Techsystems Inc., Magna International Inc., United States Marine Corps Base Bangor (later Marine Corps Air Station Miramar), Northrop Grumman Corp., Boeing Co., Honeywell International Industries etcetera while smaller businesses also continued operations such as Wacoal Enterprises Incorporated which manufactured home products before it merged with Home Depot Stores Incorporated later that year

South Portland, Maine is a small town located in the eastern part of the U.S. state of Maine. The population was 1,844 at the 2000 census, and 2,141 at the 2010 census. South Portland is noted for its maritime history and its role in early American settlement. The town was first settled by fishermen and their families in 1820 as part of what would become known as Narragansett Bay. The town's name comes from Point protectoress (now called Portsmouth) on the southern tip of town where British warships used to dock during World War II. In 1847, two years after Boston had achieved independence from Great Britain, a group of businessmen led by Commodore John D’Ita formed a company to purchase land in what would later become South Portland. The company named itself "Portland Plantation Company" and began construction on an estate that would eventually house more than 100 people. By 1860, however, most of the original settlers had left for various reasons including political instability in Massachusetts or lack of land opportunities in Maine due to changes in ownership patterns following the Civil War. By 1865, only 10 residents remained on the property which became known as "The Point". By 1870-71, when Maine State Legislature granted towns with a population over 500 acres permission to set up their own schools there were just three students enrolled in South Portland High School - all boys - and one teacher teaching Latin class out of a home built specifically for that purpose. In 1881-82 school district superintendent Isaac Sibley purchased land adjacent to The Point from local farmer Jno Ewing for $1 per acre which he donated to build present day Saunders Middle School across from South Portland High School today). In 1889 Sibley also donated money towards building what is now Stonington Elementary School next door (the current site), thus becoming one half owner along with Amos Adams Sr., son of early settler AmosAdams who served as Superintendent until his death in 1916; together they founded Adams Academy which still operates today under new management directives). Prior to 1800s only men could vote here so women didn't gain suffrage until 1920 when south portland municipal election law changed
