South Portland, Maine is a town located in Cumberland County, Maine. The population was 710 at the 2010 census. The first settlers of South Portland were men from Dorchester County, Massachusetts who established a trading post there in 1799. In 1802, the town was created as part of Cumberland County when it was separated from Dorchester County. The first courthouse in South Portland was built in 1814 and is still in use today. The town developed around its two public schools which were founded in 1820 and 1830 respectively. As the town grew, so did its economy which relied on agriculture and fishing. In 1901, South Portland voters passed a resolution to become an incorporated municipality. This action allowed for the growth of businesses within the community and helped make SouthPortland one of the most thriving towns in Maine during this time period. In 1946, SouthPortland became one of the first municipalities to be impacted by mainland United States bombing during World War II when Japanese forces bombed Pearl Harbor. Aftermath- wrought destruction throughout downtown including many homes and businesses- led to a resurgence of interest in downtown redevelopment that began occurring shortly thereafter. Today, much of downtown remains untouched from World War II with only some minor renovation necessary every few years due to upkeep costs alone! Today’s economy has seen continued growth through retail entrepreneurship as well as professional services such as healthcare or accounting firms; both areas currently experiencing strong demand due to recent immigrants settling into town seeking these opportunities along with steady influxes of new residents making permanent changes over time!
