In 1863, a group of men from South Portland, Maine met to discuss the possibility of forming a holster company. The holster company was founded in 1863 and continue to manufacture holsters to this day. The first holsters were made with leather and whalebone straps. There were many changes over the years, including the introduction of elastic waistbands in 1892. In 1933, HolsterCo introduced its own steel belt loop holster which remain popular to this day. In 1878, South Portland, Maine was the first town in New England to adopt a concealed carry law. The ordinance allowed citizens to carry handguns with them without having to obtain a permit from the police. South Portland became an "arms free zone" in 1984 when the state legislature passed a bill that made it illegal for civilians to possess firearms within 500 feet of any school or public building.
South Portland, Maine is a town located in the eastern part of Maine. The population was 6,521 at the 2010 census. It is the largest town in Cumberland County and by far its most populous community. South Portland is bordered to the north by Brunswick and to the south by Scarborough. The town has five airports- two military and three commercial- as well as two parks- one for residents and one for visitors. The first settlement in what is now South Portland was made up of people from New Hampshire who were brought over on the Mayflower in 1620. The area that would become South Portland was first known as King'sborough because it belonged to King George II of England. After King George II died, his son, James I of England, reigned for a short time before he too fell fatally ill and was succeeded by his young nephew Henry VIII of England. This left Prince Edward Island with control over what would eventually become Cumberland County, including much of what today constitutes South Portland. In 1785, when Massachusetts began issuing land grants dating back to Plymouth Colony, they also gave each township an equal share. As a result of this gift, many Scotsmen settled down in southeastern Maine after fleeing Protestant persecution in their homeland during the 1590s religious wars between Scotland and Ireland (a conflict which led directly to Scottish independence). Many Scotsmen also immigrated to America during this time period seeking opportunity and freedom from British rule (though some did manage to make it big financially). In 1812 SouthPortland became part of Cumberland County when it was organized out of parts of Northumberland and York counties following the creation of Maine as a state following the American Revolution. Prior to this time all lands east of Port Royal Strait were considered part of York county while all lands west thereof were part Of Cumberland county under royal charter granted by Queen Anne (1701–1713). When Maine became a state on February 14th 1792 however all remaining land east Of Port Royal Strait became part Of Augusta county while all remaining land west thereof became part Of Lincoln county due largely to Sir John Franklin’s efforts followed his explorationof nearby sea lanes during 1789–1793 which proved valuable salt water drainage systems for developing Boston rather then farming along colonial coastal settlements where rainfall limited prospects for plant life other than clamshells collected from Penobscot Bayou During World War I munitions manufacturers responded favorably to shortages occurring throughout Europe due largely to British blockades that stopped shipments into America despite high prices paid for manufactured goods abroad . In 1916 Congress passed an act creating UMBRAGE FACTORY COASTAL AREA COMMISSION which authorizes federal funding through Export-Import Bank loans/insured bonds etc., providing stimulus needed during wartime times One potential development resulting from recent governmental decisions could be called “SouthPortland” or “NewPort” since these are both names given recently To properties adjacent To Interstate 95 circling The Town boundaries near US Renewable Energy Center Having treated those areas For more than 3 years with no issues; Landowners have agreed notTo sell without prior written consent & permission From Localgov

South Portland, Maine is a incorporated town in Cumberland County, Maine, United States. The population was 9,713 at the 2010 census. It lies on the south coast of Penobscot Bay and shares borders with Brunswick to the east and Machias to the north. The town began as a small farming community in 1812 when three men from South Portland bought land near present-day Machias Township. In 1814, they named their new settlement after Pierre Dorion, Sieur de la Salle's lieutenant general during the Seven Years' War who had fought in Canada. The first post office in South Portland was established in 1816. By 1840, the town had acquired a sawmill and gristmill which led to its name being changed to "SouthPortland". In 1902, South Portland became an incorporated municipality and retains its original name today. The population of SouthPortland reached 10,000 by 1990 and has since grown rapidly thanks to waves of immigration: Russians (1927 ↓), Irish (1991 ↑), Poles (1998 ↓), Bangladeshis (2002↓) and Haitians (2009↓). As of 2010, there were over 15 ethnic groups represented within SouthPortland’s 14 square miles – more than any other municipality in Maine! Today's economy is based on service industries such as retail trade & repair services; agriculture; fishing; shipbuilding; manufacturing; and tourism. The community also benefits from hunting opportunities due to its location on Penobscot Bayou which provides Accessible Hunting Land for Sport Anglers License holders from across New England
South Portland, Maine was settled in 1638 by John Wheelock and others. The town was named after the Southport River which flows through it. In 1864, the town was renamed Portland.
