South Portland, Maine is a town in Cumberland County, Maine. The population was 9,828 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston-Fallon, MA-NH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in South Portland was Timothy Paine who moved from Ipswich, Massachusetts in 1795. He founded a plantation near what is now downtown South Portland and named it after his home town of Ipswich. In 1826, John Porter moved to SouthPortland from Bangor and started a flour mill on Main Street which continued operation until 1892 when it burned down. In 1844, Ebenezer Chase opened the first store in what is now downtown South Portland and named it "Ebenezer's Emporium". In 1847, Ebenezer Chase married Abigail Farnsworth who was also the daughter of Major General Nathan Farnsworth of Northampton County NH and sister of Salmon Paine (founder of Plymouth). Her family ran the store until 1870 when they sold it togrocers John Wetherbee & Sons. The store continued as an independent business until 1951 when it became part of J H Weismann's grocery chain which still operates today as Weismann's Gourmet Market. After World War II there were few jobs for men so many women took over manual labor including working at local mills such as those run by Captain Ayer & Son or Birchbox Millshops which employed many women during that time period as well as later through feminism movements like NOW(). Many houses were built during this time and some remain standing today including Mrs Putnam House (built c1850), Fourth Street Baptist Church ( Built 1910) and Merchant's Bank Building (Built 1902). In 1969 two blocks east of First Avenue between State Road 7A and Seventh Street A building with art deco features caught fire causing extensive damage but no loss or injury occurred; this building remains standing today known locally as the Firetower Tower although officially its name has been changed multiple times throughout its history
