South Portland, Maine is a town located in Cumberland County, Maine. The population was 3,902 at the 2010 census. South Portland is one of two towns in Cumberland County that are both part of thePortland metropolitan area. As of the 2000 census, there were 4,623 people in South Portland and its annexed village of Westport. South Portland began as a small fishing village on the banks of the Penobscot River. In 1824, Samuel Wade founded what would become South Portland along present-day Broadway Street and Main Street. Wade's Village grew to become one of the most important commercial destinations on the Penobscot River due to its natural resources and proximity to other shipping ports onthe river system. The post office at South Portland was first established in 1827 and remained operational until 1959. The first brick school building for students in this community was erected in 1830 by Atherton expenditures Committee member Amos Eaton. This structure served as both primary and secondary educational facilities until 1964 when an addition was built which included a gymnasium and library. In 1928, Drury School opened doors for grades K-8 with instruction conducted from May to September only due to financial difficulties caused by World War I hostilities which had disrupted normal commerce along the Penobscot Valley economy. With state funding available through 1936 under then Governor Angus King’s New Deal program, Drury School became open year-round with classes conducted Monday through Friday from 9:00am to 4:00pm starting October 1st until February 15th each year; making it one of only two high schools statewide during that time period! In 1951/1952 Mrs Caryl Emerson donated land east of downtown so that St Johns Episcopal Church could be built on it providing educational opportunities for elementary school children throughout south central Maine for over fifty years! Prior to opening their doors as St Johns Episcopal Church services celebrated their 350th anniversary in 2009/2010 Reverend Drury Rev Mr John Ewing officiated services on Saturday mornings during Lent!
