South Portland, Maine is a town in the U.S. state of Maine that is also the county seat of Cumberland County. As of the 2010 census, the town had a population of 29,844 and is the largest city in Cumberland County by population. The name for South Portland came from its location on the south shore of Lake Winnipesaukee, which forms part of the border between Cumberland and New Hampshire counties. The town was founded in 1796 as a trading post on what is now called Westbrook Street by General John Stark and his family. The first white settler was John Morse who landed there with his family in 1798. In 1803, when Boston Postmaster Arthur Stiles established himself at South Portland, he named it after himself – South Portland became one of several "stations" post offices at that time along with Northborough, Framingham, Haverhill and Ipswich. In 1827 James Caldwell bought land around present-day downtown South Portland from Thacher Parsons and began to build a brick courthouse and jail which were completed in 1830. This courthouse still stands today as part of First National Bank Park located just east of downtown SouthPortland on State street across from Central Park (now known as State House Square). During World War II many residents chose to stay away from combat because they could not support themselves through their jobs or farm their home country’s need for food; but many did return to find their homes bombed or damaged during war-time bombings raids such as bombing raids over SouthPortland on 9/11/2001; these raids killed more people than any other single event in history outside wartime Japan combined! As early as 1912 Drury Bros., druggists on Meeting Street opposite where present day Powell's pier meets Interstate 95 contracted with local physician Drury & McIntyre to provide health services including mental hospital care for military veterans living near campus - this service evolved into Veterans Affairs Medical Center today known formally as United States Veterans Affairs Medical Center - USVAMC! There were 3 druggist shops open within walking distance each other up until 1941 when store #1 burned down followed by store #2 which caught fire days later! By 1951 there were only 2 stores open left side streets between Kingston Road intersection 12 miles northwest (now corner of High Street)and Doge's Head Road intersection 10 miles due west!!! These stores closed primarily due to lack Of customers during hard times!!!!!! And then along come Bed Bath & Beyond who opened up right next door to USVAMC!!!!! Today we have Blanchard Pharmacy adjacent to Walmart across Pearl River Parkway
